Math, Centers, and Continents

Last week and this week have both been review weeks for us. We have reviewed adding and subtracting as well as 3d and 2d shapes.

This week we have worked on blending sounds to form words. Below you will see one way we have practiced this. The students had no idea what letter was on their head. The class had to blend the sounds together and tell these three what word they formed. These students then had to figure out what letter they were.
The students have been editing sentences:
Last week we talked about Asia. We read Lon Po Po (the Chinese version of Little Red Riding Hood) and Little Red Riding Hood:
Then we used our Text to Text Connections chart and compared the two books:
This week we are talking about Europe. We read The Story of Ferdinand
We labeled different nouns and verbs throughout the book:
Today we read One Fine Day
I stopped reading the book towards the end and the students had to predict what the ending would be. They drew pictures, shared their endings with the class, and we attached them to our Good Readers Make Mental Images chart. Then we finished the book to see what students predicted the correct ending.
Here are some new centers for this week:
Our new writing center:
We have been talking about vowels a lot lately:
One of our new centers is a vowel picture sort:

National Symbols, Building to 5, Writing, and Centers

Last week we studied National Symbols. We discussed the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, the White House, the Bald Eagle, and the American Flag.

The Statue of Liberty:
I learned it is tall and it is green
In NYC, made in France, she is holding a tablet
The Liberty Bell:
It rang on the president's birthday, the bell has a crack, it is gold
It doesn't ring anymore, it has a crack, a spaceship was named after the bell

The White House:
In Washington D.C., has an oval office, it is a famous house
Oval office, Washington D.C., it is big

The American Flag:
Our flag is red, white, and blue! Our flag has 13 stripes!
Flag brace map
The flag has 50 stars!

We worked on building 5 in math last week:
Here is some writing from last week:
Pete the Cat was walking in his white shoes. Pete was stepping in the puddle.
I love my Pete the Cat book. I like my Pete the Cat book because is has songs.

MLK Week

This week, we have been discussing Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream. It has been fun listening to all of my students' dreams and why it is important to treat everyone equally. We started our week reading Happy Birthday Martin Luther King and On Martin Luther King Day. After reading the book and poem and discussing what his dream was, I had the students write about their dreams.
Here are some examples of their dreams:
"My dream is to be a doctor and a doctor of a horse."
"My dream is to be a vet."
We read the poem A Box of Crayons and the book The Crayon Box that Talked. The students really started to understand that diversity is a good thing! We wouldn't want to see things only in black and white, but in color.
After reading the book and poem, we created our class box of crayons
We used a Venn Diagram to show how our class was like MLK and ways that we are different.
We are learning the terms, great than, less than, and equal to in math this week.
Here is a poem we learned to help the students understand great than and less than.
We have continued learning how to answer math word problems. Today the students wore t-shirts with the minus and equal sign. I read the word problem, then the class had to place these students in the correct order.
I have a couple of new centers this week:
Mr. Gator: Each student draws a number then they have to figure out which number Mr. Gator wants to eat.
I found these cute mailboxes and Target! In the mailboxes are envelopes with cvc words in them. They have to take the letters out and spell the word correctly. Then they have to write the word and draw a picture of it.
Some of your kiddos may have mentioned our new behavior chart! If you are confused that your child says I was on blue today, here is why:
Hopefully this will motivate the students more than the red light did!

Parents, thank you so much for helping your child complete their penguin research project! They taught me many new things about penguins! They all did a great job!!
I hope you all have a great weekend!!
